The Vacation Series: How to Treat a Sunburn

So you pulled a Kim Kardashian and not only did you get a terrible sunburn, but your sunglasses left huge white blank spaces on your face. Unfortunately after spending a gorgeous day at the beach this past weekend i am left looking a little more like a Kardashian, and not in a good way at all. Below are my tips and tricks to not only not getting burned, but what to do if you do get burned.

How to prevent sunburn:

1. WEAR SUNBLOCK. This seems like it goes without saying, but it still amazes me how many of my friends don't wear sunblock.  I've gotten the "I don't burn" "I don't belive in sunblock" "I hate the feeling." These are all stupid excuses. Find a sunscreen you like, there is a million out there so you are bound to find one that doesn't make you squeamish. So just wear it, your skin will thank you later, when you still have the face of an angelic 15 year old. I wear SPF 30 every time I know I will be outside.

2. If you are going to the beach, pool or will be outside sweating, wear a sweat proof, water proof formula. This was my downfall. I misplaced my trusty Shiseido Very Water Resistant Sunblock, so I had to use my everyday sunblock from Clinque. Safe to say that, it was not waterproof, it slide right off my face without my knowing.

3. Limit your exposure and wear a hat. I know I sound like your grandmother, but rather than laying outside for hours trying to get that gorgeous tan, opt to tan a few days a week for less periods of time. This better ensures that you are not forgetting to apply sunblock. Wearing a hat is a great way to shield your face from the sun, and with so many cute options out there, why wouldn't you wear one is a better question.

So you have a sunburn now what?

1. Get out of the sun and do not tan until your skin is back to a none lobster red. This is so important, I've had girlfriends tell me they love getting a sunburn because its a good base for a tan. Ugh. Terrible. This is so bad and going out in the sun after your skin literally just burnt and boiled itself is a sure way to damage it for a long time. Just stay inside and avoid the sun at all costs. This would be a good time to embrace that straw hat you bought in the beginning of summer and swore you would wear everyday.

2. Hydrate & Replenish. Keeping your fluids up will help the process, as your skin is dehydrated, so drink up. Also because your skin is damaged and burnt, moisturizer like crazy. In the past few days I have literally been drowning in lotion, putting it on my face every 1-2 hours. This has ensured that I didn't peel, and has helped speed up the recovery process. After washing my face with purity by philosophy I have been applying my Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair in the day and night. I follow it up with my Origins Drink Up Treatment. These together have kept my skin, hydrated and kept me from peeling. Absolute lifesavers.

3. Use a mouse based self tanner. I know this seem totally weird, but this has helped even out the horrible sunglasses rims I have around my eyes and nose. Basically by doing this you are blending in the two tones you have. Also this seems to make the red appear less red and speeds up the browning process. I have been using the Clarins Instant Smooth Tanning Glow, which also adds another layer of moisture. Use your self tanner with caution, and try to only apply it at most twice a week, as we wouldn't want to end up looking orange.

Products

Best Water Proof Sunscreen

Shiseido
Ultimate Sun Protection Cream for Face

This stuff is great! It lasts a long time, is super smooth and luxuries feeling. This is very water resistant, you may sweat, but this suncreen will stay put, the best I have used thus far. You can buy it here.

Best Moisturizing Self Tanner

Clarins
Instant Smooth Golden Glow
This stuff is amazing, doesn't turn my face orange, isn't blotchy and is super creamy but isn't greasy. This pot has lasted me ages too, I bought this last year before I went to France. You can buy it here.

Best Moisturizer/ Mask

Origins
Drink Up Mask

So this is a mask that I love using in the winter when my skin is really dry. I never use this in the summer as I have oily skin at this time of year. However this has been the best moisturizer for my sunburnt skin and has made it not peel and remain soft and smooth. You can buy it here.

Best Serum to Repair Damage

Estee Lauder
Advance Night Repair
I love using this every other night anyways, but i have been putting this on my face twice a day to speed up the recovery process and help undue some of the damage I've done to my skin. This is a cult product for me and you can get it here, in fact I suggest you do as this will do wonders for your skin. You can read my review here to get a better idea of how amazing this is.
